Why do certified organic shampoo bars foam less than regular shampoo bars?
The COSMEBIO organic coametic label prohibits the use of Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI). Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a surfactant that comes from coconut oil.
A product derived from coconut oil? Sounds all natural and good for us and the planet.
Well, it’s not so simple. Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate or SCI is used in the composition of many solid cosmetics because it gives the products a high foaming power that is highly appreciated by consumers. Most consumers are so used to having a very foamy shampoo that they believe that no foam = no cleansing.
Nothing wrong with wanting a good satisfying foam right?
Unfortunately, its manufacturing process, called ethoxylation, is extremely polluting for the environment. The process involves ethylene oxide, a substance that is highly toxic to humans by inhalation but also irritating and corrosive to the skin and eyes.
This is why Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate or SCI is NOT allowed in Cosmebio certified organic cosmetics.
The organic and ecological alternative to Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS), which is authorised by COSMEBIO. Its provides a good option to replace SCI in the formulation of solid cosmetics because Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS) is gentle on the skin and hair and respectful for the planet.
