What is Bilberry?
Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are native to Northern Europe and Northern Asia. Bilberries – also called “European Blueberries” are related to the American Blueberry. They are both from the same family, but are actually 2 different species. Bilberries grow on a bush, and the fruit is smaller in size, whereas American Blueberries can grow on larger bushes (that sometimes look like small trees), and the fruit is also bigger in size. Bilberry is referred to as Vaccinium myrtillus whereas American Blueberries are from the species Vaccinium cyanococcus.
Both Bilberry and American Blueberry contain high amounts of Anthocyanins. This compound gives the fruits their dark blue colour. Furthermore, Anthocyanins are part of the Flavonoid family, a group of potent antioxidants. This is why Bilberries and Blueberries are an excellent source of all-natural antioxidants!
